IT Girls is a project that wants to encourage girls to start thinking about education and eventually potential career in the world of information technology, from early age on. It started off as an initiative of young employees of United Nations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where this idea and this topic was voted as best one in the “UNder30 Innovation Challenge”.
The rationale behind the IT Girls initiative lies in the cross-cutting commitment for the participation of women and girls in the labour market and their equal involvement in all career directions outlined in frameworks for protection and promotion of women’s rights and national policies and legislation in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).
The IT Girls project breaks this gap by addressing the fact that women and girls remain invisible in the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector.
Although one of the highest paying occupation groups in BiH, with the possibility of rapid growth, the ICT sector is highly male dominated. Therefore IT Girls has great potential for encouraging girls to take on ICT and start developing their skills from an early age.
